 You don`t celebrate Mendig carnival you live it!! And in a way that would be appreciated by many funny main cities, if they still could!!!

How is he? To understand the Mendig carnival you have to enjoy it. It is intelligent, humourous, traditional and marked by a warm cordialness which you won`t find in any of the carnival main cities. Who does it ? The head of the carnivalists is the "Veilchendienstagskomitee" where all carnival clubs do belong to. They are also responsible for the prince and the big "Veilchendienstagszug" (a great parade, happening all 2 years)

What happens?

The prince-pair regents 2 years. They are accompanied and protected during their regency by their "Hofstaat" and 9 men, which where found as friend and which share the same love for the traditional carnival, the "Prinzengarde Mendig". The carnival happenings "Damensitzungen and Bälle" celebrated in the halls of our city are even far away known for their good mood. On "Weiberfastnacht" female carnival on thursday, the woman regent and demand a carnival tribute from men, naturally with a kiss as a revert. The " Niedermendiger Stadtsoldaten" citizens of the lower part of Mendig and "Obermendiger schwarzen Husaren" citizens of the upper part of Mendig, do arrest several people and in dark cellars courts are held in which no eye remains dry (for laughing).

Die Prinzengarde 1970 Mendig

That is the "Prinzengarde Mendig" with its commander Josef Altmann who leads the Prinzengarde in his inimitable way. Josef, in Mendig just called Altmanns Jupp, and his men are without doubt in the time without carnival very active. They organize "Mundartabende" talking dialect of their area, sets the Maytree, is active on the Santa Clause market in Mendig ( on the first Saturday before first advent) and meets for breakfast at a member of the Prinzengarde, Heinz Hamann, each Wednesday at 9.00 a.m.

The Kellbach Trio

The best you can see on stage at Mendigs carnival. The guys (the trio does`t exist of only three men) are so good that they make the complete hall within three minutes booiling. Their frontmann Frank Neideck is a sympathetic of first range for "owe un unne". They were born by a group of joung activists of the "Obermendiger Karnevalsgesellschaft 1903". They present their lokally couloured textes with changing, funny ideas. Even the biggest hater of carnival begins to swing and tears begin to run when they start.

Their hit " Heij Mennich - dau bes e Jefühl" contains in its few lines more about the Mendig way of live than a complete book could do it. Here is the text:

Karins dancing group

Karins dancing group, found before more than 25 years by Karin Becker-Schmitt, is the symbol for the carnival of Mendig, concerning stage or showdance. The dances the girls present, be it as witches, clowns, sambadancers or haremsgirls, in selfmade beautifoul costumes, are so good, that even Michael Jackson seems to be a inhabitant of a seniorhome. They won several prices and were seen on different TV-Programmes and regional TV-spots.

The man with board before his head

Gerd Bous knows his job as a speaker very well, symbolising for years "Der Mann mit dem Brett vorm Kopf" (the man with the board before his head). When he enters the room with a serious face, placing on pointe after the other, the audience cries. Everything in the typical Mendig dialect.

Thats the way the speaks (Büttenreden) have to be!!!
